About an Author Career

Never has there been a better time to be an author than right now! Speaking as an author of today, I can attest to that fact. With so many opportunities and tools available, even those who didn’t like English class or ever thought they would be an author can have the chance if they work at it.

One of the biggest factors is modern technology. Computers and the Internet make it easy to live and work virtually anywhere. So many people work from home now! And that includes authors. In fact, I even worked online with American Book Publishing to have my book published! That included working one-on-one with an editor as well as the design and production departments. What a great opportunity. With just a computer and an internet connection, you can be on your way to having a career as an author.

The Internet also affords authors the chance to converse with people (potential readers/fans) from all over the U.S. and all over the world. When in history has that kind of opportunity been available? Connecting with people of all types is virtually easy. If you are willing to put yourself out there, you can connect with so many potential readers and build an audience.

Email is so huge. It used to be that conversing meant writing a letter and waiting for the sender to receive it (via boat, horseback, mail carrier, etc). With email, information is exchanged nearly instantly. Authors can send out information or newsletters, and continue to build their audience using this medium.

Rather then spending money renting office space or store fronts, authors today can do business very inexpensively. With a website and blog, authors grant potential readers access anytime of day! An effective website or blog should include information about the author, the book, as well as a wealth of information on the genre of the book so potential readers will find it as they search online.

Inexpensive long distance calling and even video conferencing is the norm today! Authors can definitely take advantage of these opportunities and connect with readers. Just think of how you can be involved in book clubs across the country or provide interviews for the media even if you are not able to meet face to face. National attention is as close as your phone or web cam. Don’t forget podcasts! Recording software and a computer mic make it easy to offer information to others.

An author career can really be what you make it. Even if you already have a “day job” or a family or other obligations, this is a career that can work with you! Send emails in the evening, or wake up early and record a podcast, or even take a lunch break and talk with the media.

I made a career as an author, so can you.
